The management of injuries
following car accidents is quite complex. Generally the earlier one
seeks intervention, the more likely the patient is to make a recovery.
Chiropractic manipulation has been demonstrated to be effective in
the treatment of acute (new) whiplash injuries and more recently some
evidence is starting to emerge that the benefits can be achieved in
more chronic (long-standing) whiplash injuries although this does
take longer. Chiropractic treatment for whiplash injuries is usually
careful spinal manipulation supported by other measures such as stretching,
the use of ice and laser therapy or machines that release the fascia
around the injured muscles. Once patients have noticed an improvement
in their levels of pain, we encourage them to embark on a course of
specific exercises to address the deconditioning in their injured
neck and shoulder muscles. Chiropractic treatment and rehabilitative
exercise programmes of specific exercises have also been shown to
be extremely effective in the management of headaches which are often
associated with whiplash injuries.
