About Osteoporosis

One in three women and one in twelve men over the age of 50 have osteoporosis. There are three million sufferers in Britain.

It is a silent disease and usually the first time you know about it is when something breaks, often in the wrist, spine or hip.

Risk factors in women are an early menopause, an early hysterectomy or missing a period for six months due to over-exercise or over-dieting.

Men and women can be at risk when they have had to take steroids over a prolonged period of time, heavy drinkers or smokers or people with diseases such as Cushing’s, Crohn’s, Celiac, liver and thyroid problems.

At Clifton Chiropractic Clinic our scanner provides an instant indication of your risk of fracture. If the results are positive, we will refer you back to your GP for further tests and appropriate medication.

DXA (Special X-Ray) scanning is the gold-standard for diagnosis but it is expensive and not readily available on the NHS. Ultrasound densitometry, available at Clifton Chiropractic Clinic provides a relatively inexpensive, simple and quick, non-ionising test using the heel bone.

Screening which takes about 15 minutes can be arranged by booking an appointment with the receptionist.
