Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Scanning

Over the past decade, the use of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound has been on the rise and has become the first choice with many healthcare providers when assessing for musculoskeletal injuries.

At Clifton Chiropractic Clinic we are now able to offer patients a diagnostic ultrasound scan which allows the chiropractor to evaluate for any damage to the tendons, ligaments and muscles of the body. This extra information will provide greater diagnostic accuracy and allow for a tailored and more direct treatment plan for the patient. Gareth Slade, one of chiropractors is a qualified and experienced sonographer.

What is Musculoskeletal Ultrasound?
MSK Ultrasound is a safe, non- invasive diagnostic tool that uses sound waves to produce pictures of tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints throughout the body.

How does it work?
It involves the use of ultrasound gel, which is place directly on the skin and the probe transmits high frequency sound waves through the gel and into the body which eventually creates a black and white picture on the screen.

Is it safe?
There are no associated risks associated with the use of MSK Ultrasound.

What are the capabilities of MSK Ultrasound?

Tendon tears or Tendinitis of the rotator cuff in the shoulder, Achilles tendon in the ankle and other tendons throughout the body

Muscle tears, masses or fluid collections

Ligament sprains or tears

Inflammation or fluid (effusion) within the bursae or joints

Early changes of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Nerve entrapments such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Benign and Malignant soft tissue tumours

Ganglion cysts

Hernias

Foreign bodies in the soft tissues (such as splinters or glass)

In the upper abdomen: livers, gallbladders, common bile duct, kidneys, pancreas, spleen

In the urinary tract: bladders and kidneys

What are the limitations of MSK Ultrasound?
Ultrasound waves cannot penetrate through bone, therefore, it cannot visualise internal structures of joints and bone. Other imaging modalities are used such as MRI to visualise these internal structures. There is also a limitation to the depth that sound waves can penetrate; therefore, deeper structures in larger patients may be difficult to view.

How much will a scan cost and how long will it take?
The fee for a scan of one region is £95. An ultrasound scan will take approximately 30 minutes and will be carried out by Hamish Mathieson (BSc Medical Imaging, MSc Medical Ultrasound). The referring practitioner will receive a written report.
